Home Instead Senior Care Southeast Houton helps Seniors in Healthy Aging with Exercise

Regular exercise is even more important for seniors than other age groups because the risk of disease and lost mobility is greater, and the positive effects are realized more quickly.  That’s according to the Healthy Aging® Web site, the official site of the Healthy Aging® Campaign — a national ongoing health promotion designed to broaden awareness of the positive aspects of aging and to provide information and inspiration for adults, age 50+, to improve their physical, mental, social and financial fitness.

September is Healthy Aging Month.  Here are tips for getting started on an exercise program:

Choose an exercise you like and stick with it.
Use the buddy system. Arrange to have a friend meet you – It’s harder to say no to exercise when you exercise with a friend.
Walk, swim, climb, bicycle, dance, fish! Join a walking group or visit your local Y, recreation center, park, church, or senior center.

BEIJING OLYMPICS SEES MORE OLDER ATHLETES THAN EVER BEFORE

Live Long Dreams Come True at Olympics for Older Athletes Who Never Give Up… The 2008 Olympics Games have begun.   We are not only seeing an amazing number of world records broken, but a larger number of “older” athletes competing than ever before.  Over 20 American athletes are 40 years old or older.

The oldest American competitor is 58 year old sailor, John Dane whose pursuit for an Olympic berth began in 1968, taking 40 years to realize his dream.  The oldest woman is Libby Callahan, 56 year old pistol shooter and a retired Washington, DC police officer.  She  is currently competing in her fourth Games. The Olympics oldest competitor of all the Games is 67 year old, Japanese equestrian, Hiroshi Hoketsu.
